Day 1 School Closing Outlook
Valid: Wednesday, January 22, 2025
Issued: Tuesday, January 21, 2025 3:43 PM
Summary:
Another max snow day risk is in place for Wednesday area-wide with numerous school closings (nearly every school) forecasted to have a snow day due to the continued very cold wind chills.
Discussion:
As aforementioned, yet another max risk snow day prediction is being issued this afternoon as some of the coldest wind chills of this arctic system are forecasted for overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday. Lakeshore Areas: Near the lakeshore wind chills in the morning, influenced by the relatively warm lake waters, will start to warm into the negative single digits. This would normally reduce the chances of a snow day. However, due to the more significant impacts the lakeshore has seen the past several days, the additional 1-4 inches of snowfall forecasted for the overnight hours tonight, and the continued areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility we have opted to keep a max risk in place for this region.
All Other Areas: While it is true, that conditions, with regards to wind chills, will begin to improve during the day tomorrow (after 12:00 Noon), and the Cold Weather Advisory is set to expire at Noon Wednesday, the coldest wind chills of this entire event will occur overnight tonight into Wednesday morning. Widespread wind chills, except near the immediate Lakeshore, of -15°F to as low -25°F are expected to be in place Wednesday morning at 5:00 AM Wednesday when snow day decisions are generally made. Many schools have already called classes for Wednesday due to these wind chills These wind chills are enough to warrant a maximum risk across the entire area for snow days tomorrow.
