Day 1 School Closing Outlook
Valid: Wednesday, January 08, 2025
Issued: Tuesday, January 07, 2025 4:39 PM
Summary:
A lake-effect snow event is expected to begin this Tuesday evening and persist through the day and into the overnight hours on Wednesday.
Delays and School Closures are not expected.
Discussion: A lake-effect snow event is expected to produce some fairly widespread accumulating snow, especially along the lakeshore where a generalized 1-4 inches of snowfall is expected with locally higher amounts possible. This type of system would normally have the potential to prompt some delays or school closures, however, a couple of limiting factors with this particular setup leads me to believe that snow days and/or delays are not likely.
Primarily, timing will be an issue, the bulk of the heaviest snowfall will not fall during the overnight hours tonight (Tuesday), but rather during the day on Wednesday. This will lead to the Wednesday morning commute and road conditions Wednesday morning being largely unaffected.
Additionally, snowfall rates, that is to say; how fast the snow falls and accumulates on surfaces, especially roadways, will not be particularly favorable for hazardous or inconvenient travel conditions during the part of the Wednesday morning commute that would have the potential to lead to any snow days or delayed starts.

Tuesday Evening Snowfall/Snow Day Chances Update:
Not much has changed with our thinking. Because of the expected timing and the lack of moderate to high snowfall rates, we are NOT expecting widespread impacts and school closures are NOT expected with the snowfall expected to begin this evening and continue into the overnight hours on Wednesday but a few short-term, minor impacts are not entirely unlikely.
A generalized trace amount of snow accumulation is likely across the area and totals are still not expected to increase until we look West of US-131 and really not until we look along the US-31 corridor where a general 1-3 inches is expected with some locations near South Haven expecting 2-5 inches and in Mason County where 3-6 inches are expected.
