Discussion:

Isolated to scattered snow days across much of our Northern forecast area appear plausible for Monday morning as a late-season winter system will bring a swath of snow to the region with totals ranging from 1 inch to as high as 6 inches. This system will also bring in widespread gusty winds reaching as high as 40-45 MPH across much of the region which could support a risk for a few isolated power outages and some reduced visibility.

The National Weather Service has just issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Clare, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Newaygo, Oceana, and Osceola Counties until 8:00 PM EDT Monday.

Total snow accumulations of 2-6 inches of snowfall are expected in this region and we anticipate that the highest totals will be around US-131 and US-10 interchange extending South into Newaygo County.

We have opted to include nearly all areas North of I-96 in a <15% (cyan-shading) risk as models currently anticipate that as much as 2 inches still could fall in these areas and with the combination of a low power outage risk from the winds we feel there is just enough confidence to delineate a risk here, albeit very low.

South of I-96, gusty winds to 40 MPH could still cause a sparse instance of a school closing as a result of a power outage but confidence in this outcome is too low to warrant inclusion in any areal risk delineations.

Further North, from a Muskegon to Mount Pleasant line, along the immediate

lakeshore/US-31 corridor, and along US-127, probabilities begin to increase as projected snow totals increase to 2-4 inches.

In the North-Central part of our coverage area including the cities of Big Rapids, Fremont, White Cloud, Reed City, Evart, Baldwin, Free Soil, and neighboring rural areas we have opted to further increase probabilities of snow days to as high as 31-50% as snowfall totals are currently forecasted to be in the 3-6 inch range across these areas.

One caveat, which may lower snow day chances across the area, especially the farther South you travel, is the relatively warm forecasted temperatures and roadway surface temperatures across the area due to the late-season nature of this event. These temperatures, in the upper 20s and mid 30s, may somewhat hinder the snowfall accumulation.
